Just a quick reminder that there is a lecture this Thursday (30th April) on the topic: “Lumps, bumps, scars and hernias” by Mr John Terrace. This will be held in the Sick Kids’ Hospital Lecture Theatre, starting promptly at 7pm (so please come along a bit earlier to get a seat). This talk will cover common surgical short cases for Finals exams, specifically discussing the implications of different lumps or scars. Although this is aimed at 5th years, the talk is obviously open to all.

Thursday 11th May- Society AGM and Mr Tulloh’s Surface Anatomy Seminar (Seminar Room 2, Chancellor’s Building, RIE). Start at 5.30pm

Tuesday 26th May- Guide to the Acute Abdomen- Mr Ian Currie- RIE Lecture Theatre A. Start at 6pm

The Committee’s intention for April and May is to run a number of lectures and tutorials with a clear focus on revision for Finals and Year 3 OSCE/OSCA exams. These will of course also be of interest to 4th year students as the content is pretty fundamental.

6th April- Prof Kaufman’s tour of the fetus collection- places already allocated. Meet at 5.45 outside the Common Room in the Old Medical School (for a 6pm start)

16th April- “Crash Course to Radiology for Finals and the Foundation Years.” Lecture at the RHSC, starting at 6.15pm, given by Nick Morley (Registrar in Radiology). The lecture will focus on how to present different types of X-rays with a clear emphasis on preparation for Finals.

23rd April- Endocrine Teaching from FYs- more details will follow in a couple of weeks time.

30th April- “Lumps, Bumps, Scars and Hernias.” Lecture by Mr John Terrace (ST in Surgery) covering exactly what the title suggests with a view to preparing for Finals and OSCE exams.

There will also be further Suturing Classes organised over the course of the month. Watch out for further emails advertising these.

Further to this, there will be events organised in May, again with a view specifically towards Finals. Emails will be sent out at a later date to advertise these, but in the meantime, please check the website for more details.

February Update

Hello all,

Apologies for the lack of information on the website over the last month or so; exams have been keeping much of the Committee busy!

There are a number of upcoming events, though, so please have a look at the Events section, and keep checking the website and your email for more information.

The next event is the Neurology FY1 teaching on the 19th February, 7pm at the RHSC Child Life and Health Centre. This marks the start of a new initiative for the Society, where FY1s will be giving tutorials covering the basics of different systems (history, examination and investigations). More information will follow in an email next week. To secure a place, reply to that email (first come first served).

Finally, ties are still available (£10), and I am still looking for more people to write things for the website. If you are interested, please email the Society address.

Surgical Society Christmas Lecture and Party

Twas the 14^th night before Christmas,

When all through the Sick Kids

not a creature was stirring,

Except the Surgical Society who had decided to hold their Christmas Lecture!

Yes, that’s right, you may be suffering from the bitter chill of winter, and the longing to ignore medicine for a few weeks of holiday, so let the Student Surgical Society and Dr David Sinclair lift your spirits!

We are delighted to present to you a very special talk: “Scalpels, Snakes and Skulls: an Illustrated History of Surgery.” This will no doubt prove to be an entertaining, impassioned account of the evolution of surgery, delivered by Dr Sinclair, pre-eminent anatomy lecturer and examiner for the RCSEd.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, December 11^th from 7:30pm in the RHSC (Sick Kids) lecture theatre. The talk will be followed by free mince pies, and mulled wine, and then by the ESSS Christmas Party at the Golf Tavern with a selection of drinks deals, and a chance to pick up your sponsorship card to get money off at the bar.

The event is free for members, or you can come along early and purchase your membership for £5 (£1 for Junior Members).

November’s Events

The next Surgical Society talk will be on Head and Neck surgery by Mr Paley. It will be on Wednesday 19^th November at 6.30pm and will take place in Lecture Theatre B, Chancellors Building. It promises to be a very interesting evening, covering an area of surgery that we get little or no exposure to during our undergraduate years. It will be particularly relevant to 4^th years studying the Special Senses module and anybody considering a career in this surgical speciality, maxillofacial or plastic surgery.

October’s Events

Dear all,

Two events for October:

1. GI Anatomy Session: 20th October, 7-9.30pm, in the Anatomy Teaching Lab, George Square. An email will go out this week which you should respond to to guarantee your place at the session (there are only 20 available- those who are quick enough to get their names down will be notified before the event).

2. Emergency Surgery Lecture: The first clinical lecture of the new year will be delivered by Mr Paterson-Brown in Lecture Theatre B at the Royal, 28th October, starting at 6pm prompt. If you have still to pay your membership, please come along before 5:45.

Remember, ties are available from Committee members at all events.

Surgical Careers Evening- September 11th

For everyone interested in a career in surgery, the Edinburgh Student Surgical Society is holding its first event of the year on September 11 at RIE: a careers evening complete with application tips from surgeons and junior doctors alike, representation from all surgical specialties, and opportunities to get new contacts and have many of your career questions answered.

The evening will commence at 6pm in LTB with an in-depth and informative talk from Mr Rowan Parks on the necessary steps to go from medical student to surgical trainee, giving useful details and numbers on trends in applications and training posts from previous years.

This will be followed by a careers fair in the common room at 7pm with registrar and consultant representatives from all surgical specialties, including general, orthopaedics, plastics, paediatric, vascular, obs&gynae, and many more, as well as representatives from Women in Surgery (WinS) and RCSEd. Your academic and research questions will also be answered by an academic surgical trainee representative and there will be FYs on hand to field queries regarding foundation applications and building up your CV as early as possible. Food and drink will be served and the evening will conclude at around 8:30.

To join ESSS for the 2008/2009 year, please arrive early for 5:30. Membership is £5 for the whole year, giving access to the monthly lectures, as well as the opportunity to sign up to anatomy/practical sessions.
Society ties will also be available on the night for £10. To get one, ask one of the Committee members. A picture of the tie is on the “merchandise” page.
